Face masks have been pretty much our daily wear staples these days. And not really for their fashion purposes but for the safety benefits they offer. Although they have been widely associated with keeping us safe from the Coronavirus, personal protective equipment doesn’t necessarily need to be boring.

We have listed down here some personal protective equipment you can rock–from face masks to protective suits–especially designed by brilliant Filipino fashion designers for this unusual time. Unconventional and innovative, wearable and functional, yet casual and edgy in aesthetic– here are your streetwear PPE clothing pieces you can don on the daily:

Cloth masks have been all the rage lately, and with new variations coming out every day, there’s no shortage of cloth mask designs to choose from. But if you’re looking to invest in a face mask that looks straight out of a New York Fashion Week runway show, Attique.PH gets you covered.  The brand sets itself apart from contemporaries by releasing a leather face mask collection. Contrary to what most people might think, each one is actually made to be breathable and easy to wear.

Attique.PH leather face masks come in  various colors such as white, pastel pink, teal, and a rainbow one for pride. Each one also has a sleeve for easy filter replacement. It’s made from premium quality crazy horse cow leather, plus cow nappa leather, making it a real investment in terms of protection and top-of-the-line fashion.

Where else can you find some edgy PPEs but from a creative couture genius. Juan Paolo took a step back from mask designs to focus on developing a lightweight, breathable, and water-repellant sets of protective coordinates. A combo of jacket and pants made from microfiber material, you can easily mix and match should you buy two to three sets, and know for sure you’re wearing a protective street wear suit.  The brand’s Daily Protective Gear Set is only P1,200, with sizes ranging anywhere from small to extra-large. It’s a good style investment too, considering the fact that each set doesn’t even look like a PPE at all. And therefore, you can still wear them even after the pandemic. The jackets and pants come in different colors and designs too, so you’re sure to not run out of new ways to rock a Juan Paolo PPE suit.

Aptly called The Niu Normal,  the brand takes pride in its collection of PPEs with minimalist and modern designs. The Niu Normal was brought to life by young and talented fashion designer Banggo Niu. So far, we’ve seen him come out with his active parkas and face masks which easily sold out online. What is notable about The Niu Normal parka is its versatile design, which allows for both function and flexibility. It provides a good coverage area when it’s closed for maximum protection, too.

In his own words, Niu says his pieces are “protective outerwear that you can use going to the office, the grocery, the gym, and for everyday errands”. The parkas are made of microfiber that makes it water repellent, lightweight and breathable⁣, which easily are a great choice to wear every day.

Unapologetic and edgy, Russell Villafuerte has always remained true to his authenticity and aesthetic. The release of his most recent face mask collection shows that nothing has changed. His taste remains impeccably bold and edgy without losing his design identity– be it Boston Terrier designs or horned skulls prints on his face masks. You know what’s even cooler? You can also request for a custom-printed protective mask that is uniquely your own. More than the edgy look, these designer masks are washable and breathable through its 3-ply construction. If you’re starting to build your collection of fashionable streetwear protective masks, a Russell Villafuerte face mask is the kind that you would not want to pass up.

Joco Comendador

Joco Comendador’s passion to revive the dying shoe industry in Marikina is the inspiration behind his will. His accomplishments and collaborations have been monumental through the years, and this pandemic has yet again become a testament to his ability to adapt to the rapidly changing times in fashion and lifestyle. How has he exactly fared during this pandemic? Well, one of the challenges he’s managed to overturn into success during this quarantine period is diversifying his collection through the production of stylish and edgy PPEs.

His designs have been inspired by two of his absolute favorites in the world: Ragnarok and Ariana Grande. These two very different interests inspired the Night Hare face shield and the Shadow Chaser face mask. The face shield is made out of 300 microns acetate with faux patent leather bunny ears.

Meanwhile, the designer’s face masks are handcrafted faux patent leather that is “accentuated with panels and gold-plated spike studs that will give you that punk and edge to your everyday style.” It also comes with two adjustable face straps for a better fit for any face sizes. Joco Comendador’s interpretation of night and shadow ironically gives us a beacon of light during these trying times.

There you have it! These PPEs will keep your wardrobe functional, edgy and up-to-date. Which one do you want to get your hands on ASAP? After all, we are all having a fashion emergency. No pun intended!
