Rap Artist Saweetie Pays Homage to Her Filipino Roots at the Met Gala 2021
At this year’s Met Gala, American rapper Saweetie definitely embraces her Filipino roots as she stuns in a red shimmering Christian Cowan gown featuring distinct color schemes of red, white, blue and yellow. These hues are representing the Philippine flag, according to the rap artist. This red carpet look marks her first-ever appearance at the prestigious fashion event.
Her couture look comes with an asymmetrical neckline, cutout bodice, and high slit. The skirt’s other cape panel comes with red and black colors, representing the colors of the Black American flag. Saweetie shared in an interview that the two flags are what make her an “American girl”.
Saweetie spoke with ET’s Rachel Smith on the red carpet, sharing, “My cape represents the Black American heritage flag and the Filipino flag.”
The musician chose a chic beauty look with her platinum bob and dangling diamond earrings.
Born Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper in Santa Clara, California, Saweetie was raised by her Filipina-Chinese mother Trinidad Valentin, and African-American father Johnny Harper. She rose to fame in 2017 with her award-winning hit single “Icy Girl”. Just days ago, the rapper was also named the newest ambassador of MAC Cosmetics. Her debut album, Pretty Bitch Music, is scheduled to be released this 2021.
