The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards is right around the corner! In a few days, the music industry will once again celebrate the biggest music stars in the business at the most-awaited annual music awards show. Aside from celebrating music and pop culture, we are all so thrilled to see what red carpet looks are gonna be rocked by our fave artists!

Every year, the VMAs red carpet never fails to give the spotlight on the fashion choices of celebrities at its red carpet event. The show is also known to highlight unprecedented creations by both renowned and indie fashion designers, giving the global style industry a chance to show the world what they got! From Lady Gaga to Beyonce, here are some of the most jaw-dropping, headline-making fashion statements that have ever graced the VMAs red carpet:  

Mariah Carey in 1997

Considered as shockingly too sexy during that time, Mariah Carey surprised the paparazzi by strutting down the 1997 VMAs red carpet wearing this black two-piece ensemble. With a tank top that showcased the superstar’s toned body, and a high-slit long skirt that showed off her stunning legs, the look stood out because of its simplicity, yet sexiness. Fresh from her breakup with long-time husband Tommy Mottola, this look signified the sexier, fiercer R&B queen era of Mariah Carey, who was previously more known for her ballad songs and more wholesome persona. Although the renowned diva didn’t win any awards that night, she certainly won the timeless fashion category as this would go on down the history as one of her most iconic looks that style glitterati still talk about to this day. 

Lil’ Kim in 1999

This look made history as it was named as one of the most controversial red carpet outfits in VMAs history. Lil’ Kim made headlines by wearing a breast-baring purple jumpsuit and a glittering sequined nipple pasty designed by Misa Hylton. According to an interview, the designer described the process as a natural flow of creativity and ideas, the lavender-and-silver jumpsuit was made to emulate Lil’ Kim’s personality rather than a need for provocation. 

Nicki Minaj in 2011

All eyes were on the queen of rap when she released her inner Harajuku barbie alter-ego by gracing the 2011 VMAs red carpet wearing an eye-catching hand-stitched metal dress by Amato Couture, and a high fashion face mask by ShojonoTomo. Completing the details of this look is a pile of pink and yellow hair buns and an ice cream necklace by Onch Movement.

Lady Gaga in 2011

Nobody does highly remarkable red carpet looks better than the Mother Monster herself. Lady Gaga did three outfit changes during the 2011 VMAs but her red carpet choice was the most exceptional. The singer-songwriter arrived in an Alexander McQueen Victorian painting-inspired gown with a bejewelled collar and a bottom with an underlay of tulle that gives a voluminous effect. Completing the look is the iconic Alexander McQueen armadillo shoes and a gold Philip Tracey headpiece.

Rita Ora in 2013

The British singer walked the 2013 VMAs wearing an Alex Vauthier plunging silver and blue top with crystal embellishments, paired with this show-stopping feather-like skirt with a long train. The bright sky blue feathered skirt was so enormous that it needed assistance while she walked and posed for pictures. 

Taylor Swift in 2014

Ending her long relationship with cute dresses and gowns at red carpet events, Taylor Swift stands out at the 2014 VMAs wearing a Mary Katrantzou blue unitard that accentuates her long legs. The look was complemented with a chic short bob and her signature red lips.

Beyonce and Blue Ivy Carter in 2016

Looking regal and fierce as ever, Queen B was the darling of the paparazzi during the 2016 VMAs when she walked down the white carpet wearing a sheer beaded celery green dress with a detailing of feathers, designed by Francesco Scognamiglio. She accessorized  her look with emerald and diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz. Alongside Beyonce was her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, who wore cognac taffeta and tulle pouf dress which reportedly cost around $11,000. No little princess look will be ever completed without a tiara, also designed by Lorraine Schwartz, and high-top sneakers by Guiseppe Zanotti.

Hailey Baldwin in 2017
Hailey Baldwin bared it all at the 2017 VMAs wearing a sheer plunging Zuhair Murad jumpsuit encrusted with sequins and crystals. The blonde bombshell completed her head-to-toe metallic look with silver chunky heels. 
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards will be held on the 30th of August in New York City hosted by Keke Palmer. Among the anticipated performers for the main show are Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Miley Cyrus. The awards show will be simulcast live by ViacomCBS.
