The Kardashian-Jenner’s Style Evolution Through The Years
Keeping Up With The Kardashians has made headlines lately as the family announced that their upcoming season 12 in 2021 would be their last season. Before we bid farewell (to the TV show, because the family ain’t going anywhere obvs), we wanna look back at the Kardashian-Jenner’s style evolution since the reality show was first introduced to the world in the late 2000s.
2007 Season 1: The Birth of American Reality TV’s Royal Family
The show’s opening intro would go on to be one of the iconic credits in TV history, but we did not know it yet in 2007. We were quite aware though that bodycon dresses were pretty huge that year as donned by Kim and Kourtney, and so were sparkling pieces like Khloe’s and little Kylie’s. And can we just say that those curly hair-do’s were a hit then? Lol!
Leopard prints were also super huge in 2007. Just look at this promo photo for the then-new reality show.
This nude midi sheer dress paired with peep toe pumps ensemble by Kim is so 2007 too! Personally, I was loving Kourtney’s personal style already in season 1. Just look at that cute short dress on her, amped up with a sparkly silver heeled Mary Janes. Meanwhile, the Jenner sisters were still super young here, looking so cute in their jeans. And a dress paired with denim pants on Kendall? Yep, that’s some 2007 fashion for ya.
The show finally premiered and the family didn’t know what’s about to come. The cringe-worthy early 2000s fashion was slowly fading away, as seen on the Kardashian’s biggest sis. Kourtney Kardashian, who’s wearing this lovely white kimono dress, made her look more interesting with that studded purse. Honestly, this dress can still be worn today with just an upgraded styling.
The family is photographed here with the show’s creator Ryan Seacrest. The fashion details that are so telling of 2007 style are those layered long pearl necklaces worn by momager Kris and Kourt.
Season 2
At the red carpet launch of the show’s season 2, the Kardashian sisters once again sizzled in their body-fitting dresses. Kim’s dress fringe details were a little off though, but Khloe’s prussian-colored bandage dress was winning, and so was Kourt’s nude asymmetrical silk dress.
The Kardashian sisters and mom Kris looked so cute in this season 2 promo photo. The colors of their dresses just look good and work together.
Season 3 & 4
These promo photos for seasons 3 & 4 show a little more sophistication compared to previous seasons. They’re all about the sparkles and glitter. Kim looks extra chic with that new ‘do with bangs.
2010: Season 5
The girls have embraced a more timeless look with these little black dresses for their show’s season 5 premier.Season 5 season saw a more grown up styles of then 13-year-old Kylie and 15-year-old Kendall, who were into cute little dresses and skirt and top outfits. The Kardashian sisters were all about bodycon dresses. 2011: Season 6
Kendall and Kylie were starting to grow into their own style personas, and slowly away from the shadows of their big sissies. The Jenner sisters became teen idols in the early 2010s, and were noticed for their fashion sense. Here, they’re seen wearing flowy short dresses at Justin Bieber’s movie premiere in 2011.
2012: Season 7
We can consider 2012 as a new era of fashion for the family as they started wearing elevated street yet feminine looks. This was when Kim started dating rapper Kanye West too. One of the episodes of season 7 saw the iconic moment when Kanye himself, along with his stylist Renelou Padora, cleared out Kim’s closet to give way to new, Kanye-approved outfits. As the rapper was already a designer that time, Kim had started building close relationships with high fashion houses and couture designers too, as well as premium street fashion brands.
In that photo above, Kim posed with then-boyfriend Kanye at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
2013
The other Kardashian sister got a little more stylish too. Here, Khloe Kardashian is seen wearing an asymmetrical chartreuse gown while attending a charity event alongside her sisters in 2013.
The Jenner sisters were becoming a more and more regular fixtures at major red carpet events with their cool Cali style.
2013 was Kim’s first ever Met Gala experience. She was eight months pregnant.
“Kanye was performing so I wasn’t actually invited. I was just Kanye’s plus one. And that was okay with me because I never really dreamed I would be at the Met Ball. I know no one really probably wanted me there at the time,” she told Vogue.
The reality star wore a floral print Givenchy gown designed by Riccardo Tisci, which was met with a storm of critiques and memes comparing Kim to a couch. She later on shared that she cried all the way home because of the mean memes, but now looks back at the look as a brilliant vision by Tisci.
2014
The couple made a fashion milestone when they became the first ever biracial cover stars of Vogue Magazine. It was also in 2014 when the two got married in Florence for a 200-person ceremony. The bride wore Maison Margiela, and the groom wore Givenchy.
2014 also marked the year when Kylie started to get lauded for being adventurous with her hair color choices, that netizens were quick to copy at the time.
2015
This year, the Jenner sisters had completely solidified their fiercer street couture style and high fashion choices. At this point, Kendall had established her career as a model, walking on the runway shows of high fashion brands such as Chanel, Vera Wang, Diane von Fürstenberg, Donna Karan, Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Fendi and Balmain.
Here, Kendall went with a Oriett Domenech LBD that featured embellished shoulders and a bare back, while Kylie’s leather Bryan Hearns option looked like a modern take on armor, showing some skin through chain details.
Kylie wore this dazzling nude illusion Steven Khalil gown featuring large cut-outs at the hips at the Grammy’s After Party event hosted by Armani.
Khloe also attended the after-party in this Constantina & Louise couture, and Kendall rocked an Elie Saab gown.
2015
Kim wore a sheer Roberto Cavalli couture at the Met Gala 2015.
Although Kim debuted her first MET Gala appearance in 2013, 2015 is the year wherein other members of the family also attended the invite-only annual event that celebrates art and fashion.
2016
The year 2016 is a good year for Kanye West as his Yeezy collaboration with Addidas started garnering fame across the fashion industry. This is also the year where Kanye started styling and designing Kim Kardashian’s clothes. The streetwear brand is known for its pieces in shades of beige as well as alien-like sneakers.
This year also marked the year when the Kar-Jenner’s have made latex dressing a thing:
2017
2017 was the show’s 10th season anniversary. The family recreated their season 1 opening credits video. From wearing bodycons in 2007, the family has come a long way with their noticeably high fashion looks.
This year is also our favorite style era of Mrs. West. She started rocking outfits that were more on neutral colors like black, nude, beige or brown– with street fashion sensibilities accented with racy details. This was also the phase when Kim made cycling shorts an “it” style piece again.
2017 was also the year when Kylie Jenner had her first ever Met Gala appearance, in this sheer Versace gown.
2018
The Kardashians take festivities seriously. The sisters broke the internet by wearing matching angel lingerie costumes complete with wings for Halloween 2018, as they’re dressing up as Victoria’s Secret angels.
Kim cemented her high-style racy and street looks by 2018. This is hands-down some of our favorite looks:
Kim’s style influence had obviously rubbed on her sisters Khloe and Kourtney:
2019
Kim Kardashian’s most remarkable Met Gala look to date was this Manfred Thierry Mugler vintage couture. It was reported that Kim took literal breathing lessons to be able to function in this dress with waterdrop-like embellishments:
Kourtney Kardashian looked amazing in this bra and sparkling suit at the 2019 People’s Choice Awards.
2020
While Kourt and Kim started the year by making headlines with their latex jumpsuits last Paris Fashion Week, the Kar-Jenners have also become drawn to solid, bold colors.
Before the pandemic happened, they are often seen in the streets of New York and LA wearing bright-colored outfits. Recently, Kylie Jenner was seen out and about wearing a bright green dress complete with a face mask.
It’s sad to say goodbye to our fave American reality TV show which has totally contributed to a cultural reset globally. Don’t worry though, you can relive the nostalgia by streaming all of KUWTK episodes on Hayu and Netflix.
