Beauty Hack: How to Mask-Proof Your Favorite Lipstick

We are sure by now you are pretty bummed that you cannot flaunt your lipstick shade as much anymore. Wearing face mask is just a must these days, and we cannot do anything about it.

But if you’re just like us who just looooove wearing lipstick even if no one can even see it under the mask, then we got some beauty hacks for you. There are ways to wear your signature lip color without having it smudge all over the inside of your face mask. The key is in your application.

While staying home is still the best bet to spend your day, going out for essentials is an inevitable activity, plus a chance to rock your favorite lipstick for feel-good purposes. So make your lipstick day count with these awesome tricks:

1.Prep your lips.

Start by making sure that your lips are moisturized, smooth, and free from flakes. Excess lip product can build up on those uneven patches, and it would also feel unpleasant for loose skin to rub against your mask. To fix this, use a lip scrub or a soft damp towel to gently exfoliate your lips. Avoid pulling at loose skin as this can cause further damage to your lips. This Lip Scrub from Detail (P99 at Beauty MNL) is easily an absolute lip care favorite of beauty fans for its gentle beads that exfoliate.

If you haven’t made a habit of reapplying lip balm throughout the day, at least make sure to include it in your skin care routine. Apply it before going to bed and when you do your morning preps so your lips stay healthy. Burt’s Bees Lip Balm (P225 at Sephora Philippines) is the classic go-to lip balm for its moisturizing Vitamin E and refreshing Peppermint Oil.

2.Line your lips

Kylie Jenner was truly onto something when she popularized lip kits because applying a lip liner helps lipstick last longer! After blotting off any excess lip balm, use a lip liner to outline and fill in your lips. You don’t need to buy a matching shade for every lipstick that you own; a nude lip liner that matches your natural lip color should work with any lipstick. Tupped Boutique at Uptown Mall, BGC carries Kylie Cosmetics, with price depending on the lip kit collection. Now that we are in  quarantine, it is better to shop online from Tupped’s Facebook page. The Kylie Jenner lip kit in Boss shade is a winning shade of deep red.

3.Choose the right lipstick formula

Sorry, but lip gloss just isn’t going to work for this beauty hack. Lip colors with a matte finish are the best type to use because the lack of moisture makes it less likely to transfer. Filipino indie beauty brand Winter Sky Cosmetics takes pride in its Coffeetints (P180), as they’re literally the perfect choice right now because of its ultra lightweight matte finish with rich, lasting pigment. And we mean, they’re real lightweight. We have tested these Coffeetints (P180), and boy they feel light and literally does not transfer at all no matter how sweaty you get. They’re long-lasting too, and still looking so rich on your lips even after many hours. The best thing about Coffeetints is they come in shades perfect for all skin hues, even some complementing ones for morena’s. For direct orders, you may contact +63966-6831911.

With your lip liner in place, apply your matte lipstick as normal. If you are using a bullet lipstick, use a clean tissue to gently pat on your lips to remove the excess pigment, apply another layer of lipstick, then blot the color a second time.

4.Set with powder.

Just as we use powder to set our foundation and concealer, powder can be used to set your lip color. A translucent powder is best for the job as it won’t affect the color of your lipstick, but other face powders can work for setting as well. This Translucent Rice Powder from Palladio (P176.60 on iHerb) is a nice choice to set your lip color of choice.

Take a clean tissue and carefully separate the layers until you have a single ply. Position this thin tissue over your lips then use a fluffy brush to dab powder over the lip area. The tissue keeps the brush from sticking to your lipstick and ruining its application, plus it controls the amount of powder that actually adheres to your lips.

Remove the tissue layer and gently smack your lips together – if they still feel tacky, you may need to apply more powder. You can also test for color steadfastness by lightly tapping your lips with the back of your hand. Your lipstick won’t be completely budge-proof but this technique should help to keep it from sticking to your mask.

You can also use this hack for whenever you want to extend the wear time of your lip color. Practice at home and try it with different formulas to find out which are your best bet for mask-proof lipstick.
