Avel Bacudio’s Latest Collection: A Tribute to Filipino Weavers and Artisans

Manila, Philippines–Renowned fashion designer Avel Bacudio has once again captured hearts and imaginations with his latest collection, presented at the Goldenberg Mansion in Malacañang. With every stitch and thread, Bacudio weaves a compelling narrative of Filipino weavers from all corners of the Philippines, showcasing their artistry and heritage on the global fashion stage.

A master storyteller at heart, Bacudio’s creations are more than just garments; they are a reflection of culture, tradition, and the rich history of Filipino craftsmanship. Immersed in the stories of local weavers during his journeys across the country, Bacudio was inspired to create a fashion show that pays homage to their labor, preserving the traditions passed down from ancestors.

The collection, set against the historic mansion’s backdrop, exudes timeless elegance with ’60s-silhouetted dresses and classic separates, emphasizing ease and comfort. Drawing attention to the exquisite craftsmanship, the garments are rendered in a striking black and white palette. Each piece is meticulously adorned with delicate brocades, sweet bows, and intricate embroidery, highlighting the profound skill of Filipino artisans.

Collaborating with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Bacudio ventured into creating custom-made fabrics using local raw materials, including waterlily, banana, and pineapple fibers. These materials, woven with ingenuity, represent a sense of national pride and a celebration of Filipino resources.

To preserve the cultural significance of the fabrics, Bacudio retained the patterns sourced from various Filipino tribes, particularly those from Zamboanga. These patterns tell unique stories, and Bacudio chose to honor them by maintaining their authenticity while exploring innovative color combinations.

The pandemic-induced isolation led Bacudio on a soul-searching journey to rediscover purpose and meaning in his craft. As he ventured to different regions of the Philippines, he encountered skilled weavers whose age-old artistry faced the risk of being forgotten, as there was no one to carry on the legacy. This realization ignited a passion within Bacudio to uplift his own culture and breathe new life into nearly forgotten crafts.

In a heartfelt message to the younger generation, Bacudio emphasizes the importance of embracing one’s cultural heritage and supporting local artisans. For him, leaving behind a legacy of fame comes secondary to reviving and preserving the arts and traditions passed down by ancestors.
